Who is God?
Just finished preparing for Sunday's sermon. It's a doozy - you won't want to miss it!
This Sunday and for the next few weeks we'll be exploring who exactly this God we worship every Sunday (and everyday of course) is. Some of our Mennonite understanding of God is found in the Confession of Faith from a Mennonite Perspective. Check it out over at Mennolink
I'm encouraging us not to get caught in the "I believe" approach to God. It's too easy to make conversations on God into an intellectual exercise that have little bearing to how we live our lives. So if we say we believe in God, that means we engage and participate with God in our daily lives.
Anyway, read the whole sermon over in the Worship section of the website. Here's the challenge I give at the end of it:
For every statement of belief in our Confession of Faith, what is the evidence that we believe it in our congregation?
Here's my ideas:
• God has called forth a people of faith – coming to church is an effort to be formed into that people
• We also gratefully acknowledge that God has spoken to humanity – many hunger for instruction on God’s word
• God’s awesome glory and enduring compassion are perfect in holy love – many loving relationships here demonstrate the glory of God, be it lovers, parents and children, mentors and youth, friends. We know that God is love, which inspires us to love others all the more
• God’s unlimited justice and continuing patience with humankind are perfect in suffering love – the fact you’re still putting up with my crazy antics is evidence enough that you all believe in patience
Throw out your ideas and we'll see if we can get every statement covered. I'll compose them in a logical order at the end if we manage to get most of the Confession covered. Let the idea sharing begin!
